I had an absolute blast making this cake for a friend of a friend. She came to me with some design elements in mind, and this is what we came up with for the final product.
I'm fairly confidant using fondant to sculpt decorational elements, but there's always a bit of terror lurking in the back of my mind when it comes to covering cakes in fondant. It's tricky. Everything matters. Is it too humid? You're screwed. Is it too dry? You're screwed. Is your cake not quite cool enough? Screwed!
So a bit about me: I'm one of those people who insists on doing everything myself BECAUSE I CAN. My poor dear husband suffered greatly from this while we were engaged. My level of involvement in our pre-wedding activities bordered on the insane, not so much because I cared how things looked but because I am Italian and Italians are thrifty and we do things our gosh darn selves.
I can't remember how these cookies came to be. A wonderful woman from my office at the time (who despite all odds is still a loyal client, hooray!) had ordered them for a bridal shower. But I don't recall how the conversation about cookies even started. Had I decorated sugar cookies before and have subsequently blocked the memory? Was I so confident in my artistic skills that I blindly accepted a random challenge? I have no idea.
